Consumer Reports and Y-Axis Shenanigans

There are many data visualization sins, but the one that makes my blood boil is manipulating the Y-axis. Fox News is the master at this, so often just deleting the Y-axis entirely to invent the data story that syncs with the network’s political narratives.

While Fox News generally is creating a story that isn’t there, usually when I see Y-axis shenanigans, it is to exaggerate a legitimate story. And generally, the story is a good one to begin with that doesn’t need exaggeration.

I was not been a big fan of the Consumer Reports redesign from a graphic design perspective, but it has slowly gotten a bit better. But the really need a stronger editor (and backbone) when it comes to data visualization. Your data tells a good story to begin with—there is no need to visually lie to your readers, as they did recently with these charts showing secondary market ticket prices. Because the length of the bars indicate value, distorting them is essentially telling an untruth to your audiences. (No, $22.58 is not one quarter as much as $36…)

Just being visually truthful doesn’t make your story less impactful. And if it does, then you need to get a better story! This would be a far more truthful design:

Or, since it is a trend, I would probably suggest a line chart:

Rad Presenters Podcast Closing Up Shop

Rad Presenters

After 40 episodes, The Rad Presenters Podcast, hosted by Jon Schwabish and Stephanie Evergreen, is closing up shop. It’s understandable as Jon’s and Stephanie’s calendars kept exploding. (Honestly, I don’t know how they do all that they do.)

They both have new books and countless other ventures and websites to maintain, so I’ll look forward to keeping up with them elsewhere.

It was a really nice run with dozens of excellent topics and guests from around the industry. And I was happy to be their inaugural guest in episode #1 which you can still listen to here.

If only there was another PresentationPodcast out there though…oh there is. 🙂

What was the inspiration for and what are your hopes for Presentation-Gurus?

The inspiration comes from a big hole in the market. Not having a reliable resource or place to go for any presentation insights that weren’t commercially motivated. Presentation-Guru.com is driven by an International team of speakers, writers, designers and entrepreneurs who strive to improve the quality of presentations and public speaking.

We believe the opportunity to change a single person’s mind can possibly change the world.  Thus the website is a resource designed to help everyone deliver their message with more impact, energy and influence.

We found great presentations comprised of four things:

  1. Compelling content
  2. Visual impact
  3. Powerful delivery
  4. Effective technology

If you want to be a standout speaker, you need core skills in all of these areas.

What audiences are you hoping to reach and how can those audiences get the most out of Presentation-Gurus?

Our focus is to support everyone in the Presentation industry:

  • Presentation Professionals – designers, writers, trainers, consultants looking for quick, fresh ideas.
  • Experienced Public Speakers / presenters looking for new concepts.
  • Newbies / students interested in tools that help them write and deliver presentations that increase their capabilities and build skills that garner a competitive edge in their careers.

What are you most excited about with regard to Presentation-Gurus?

I’m personally committed to transforming the culture of presentations because I see the positive global impact of influential speakers.

We all have the power to make a difference in communication and humanity by combining clear content with visual design in all we do – home, work and life.

I’m excited – Presentation-Guru is a place for experts to share their unique insights and skills to change presentation culture.
